High School Biology Department: Exploring Science around Us - Student Experimental Activities

May 8, 2023

The teaching of high school biology places great emphasis on developing students' ability to combine theory and practice so that they can understand the reality of biological phenomena and the scientific method of biological exploration through relatively simple steps of practice. Whether the object of study is macroecology or microscopic molecules, students are able to conduct experiments using materials that are readily available around them.

This semester, after learning the concepts of "evolution" and "speciation", ninth graders have the idea that "speciation does not happen overnight, but through gradual changes, and that different species are related to each other." On April 30, the 9th-grade biology students took the role of botanists on campus, identifying different plants according to their leaf characteristics and creating a dichotomous key. In addition to collecting materials, the students had to describe the phenotypes in scientific terms and summarize the comparison results to prepare a clear and organized dichotomous key. All students completed this campus exploration trip with great enthusiasm and focus.

From genetic laws to the genetic information carriers, it took hundreds of years of research to reveal the secrets of the DNA molecule, but the mysterious DNA molecule can also be revealed in very simple steps. The tenth graders recently completed an experiment on "crude extraction of banana DNA" using only detergent and ethanol, and applauded the successful results when the students finally produced the flocculent DNA. At the same time, this experiment also stimulated the students to think deeper about the structure and properties of cells and DNA molecules.
