G6: Career Day
On 27 April 2023, students from grade 6 had their long-awaited Career Day. Accompanied by their teachers, the students left the campus and divided into five groups to visit five leading companies in the fields of technology, food, catering and transport. The prominent companies are: Anji Microelectronics Technology, Bright Dairy, Shang 9, — One Drop Water Restaurant, Le Cordon Bleu Culinary School, and Schindler Elevator Ltd.
During the visit to Anji Technology, students from classes 6(5) and 6(6) listened carefully, gaining an initial understanding of the semiconductor materials and chip industry. They learned from the engineers' introduction to what semiconductor materials are, and their role in chip production. They also gained a deeper understanding of the production process by visiting clean rooms and laboratories. After the trip, students were inspired by the engineers' diligence and innovation in the high-tech industry and were empowered with new knowledge to be able to contribute to the industry with technological advancements in their future studies and choices in career paths within the sector.
How many steps are required to deliver a bottle of rich and creamy yoghurt to the hands of a customer? Students from 6(8), 6(9) and 6(12) followed the production process to find the answer to this question. They observed the assembly line of dairy products from start to finish, following raw materials and processing until completion at Bright Diary. The students gained profound insight into the complexity of beverage production and the importance of food safety for the maintenance of a happy and healthy customer base.
Students from classes 6(2), 6(4) and 6(7) and 6(11) went to Shang 9 — A Drop of Water Restaurant and Le Cordon Bleu Culinary School to learn about the process of cooking fine dining food in both Chinese and French styles. During the visit, the students not only learned about the catering industry, but also had a chance to make Northeast dumplings, lasagne, sweet buns and other pastries with their own hands. The joy of cooking made everyone feel enthusiasm and passion for the catering industry.
Students from classes 6(1), 6(3) and 6(10) went to Schindler Elevator Ltd. During their experience at the lift company, they watched the Dome movie in groups, took a ride on the high-speed elevator and visited the production line that produces the lifts used in so many buildings in Shanghai, China and the world. Many students were intensely interested in the workflow of production lines, and in studying the mechanical operations they gained a deeper understanding of the industry.
Through the activities SHSID students engaged in this career day, participants were able to immerse themselves in the work scenarios, better understand what certain industries do, navigate and understand corporate culture, and recognize development prospects of various industry sectors. Because of this experience they have a clearer understanding of their future career planning. Our school will continue to organise such activities so that students can better explore the future workplace and find their direction.
