Grade 11: Parents Meeting Held

April 27, 2023

On the evening of April 25, 2023, Shanghai High School International Division held a parents’ meeting regarding college applications for the eleventh-grade students. The purpose of the meeting was to introduce parents to the basic information and experience of the twelfth-grade students applying to universities in various countries. SHSID High School Principal, Ma Feng, SHSID High School Vice Principal, Zhang Li, and Head Teacher of Grade 11, Hong Miao, gave speeches at the meeting and expressed their advice and expectations for students' future academic pursuits.

Firstly, Mr. Hong explained the CAS activity plan for this semester to the parents, summarized the assigned and completed tasks, and reminded them of their tasks that still need to be completed by the end of semester.

Next, Vice Principal Zhang Li discussed the important aspects of university applications in different countries. Firstly, she emphasized that the university application process is not solely a personal affair of the student, but rather a decision-making process that involves the family as a whole. She also reminded parents to listen to their children's opinions and discuss together to make wise decisions. In addition, Ms. Zhang listed a series of activities that students can consider during the summer, such as research, summer camps, internships, university visits, and so on. Ms. Zhang also reminded the parents about the rich resources that the school provides on college application and encourage the students and parents to make good use of such resources. She summarized that the application process is comprehensive and requires cooperation between schools, parents, and students.

Principal Ma introduced the purpose of the parent-teacher meeting, which was to share and relieve students' anxiety, and help them adopt appropriate strategies. During the speech, Principal Ma mentioned five key words, namely time, positioning, quantity, problem-solving, and trust. He particularly emphasized that students must plan their time well, and focus their attention on important things; in terms of positioning, students should be clear about what they want, and work hard to achieve it; when it comes to quantity, they should focus on quality rather than quantity; when solving problems, they should be patient and willing to try new solutions; finally, in trusting themselves and others, they should be confident and trusting, and willing to accept and provide help. Finally, Principal Ma summarized that throughout the application process, he always hopes that parents and schools can work together and create a better senior high school experience for the students.

After the wonderful speech by Principal Ma, the parents meeting moved on to the second phase - the experience-sharing session. The session was divided into five sub-venues during which Grade-12 students would share their experiences and feelings regarding applying to universities in countries or regions such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, South Korea, and Hong Kong. During the sharing session, students gave out detailed accounts of their own application experiences, including preparation tips, application documents, the interview process, and other useful information. Parents were able to learn from their first-hand experience and apply those lessons to their own children's applications, so as to provide more support and guidance.

The parents meeting was a complete success, as participating parents gained a clearer understanding and insight into their children's future learning and development. Through this event, the school hopes to help students achieve their dreams and future goals more effectively. The event was structured to provide parents with an opportunity to interact with the school administration, teachers, and senior students. They were able to learn about the school's academic programs, curriculum, and expectations for their children's academic and personal growth. The sharing session on university applications was particularly informative, as attending parents gained vital information and tips to help their children prepare for university applications.
