Puxi Campus Grade 4-5: Chinese Book Club
Following the whole book reading activity of "Sharing the Beauty of Books" last semester, on the basis of the whole book reading, the fourth-grade native Chinese reading month activity transformed “individual reading” into “book club”. It’s aimed to fully stimulate students' interest in Chinese reading, and improve students' comprehensive ability of Chinese language expression and teamwork.
This activity gives more autonomy to the students. Students can choose their own friends to form a reading club, and they can also choose a book they are most interested in to carry out reading and discussion. At the beginning of the activity, members of each reading club made arrangements for the following reading plans and carried out division of labor according to the requirements of the final group presentation.
Every week, students use the lunch reading time to discuss the week's reading content with their group partners. During this lively question and answer process, the students had a deeper understanding of the book content and were better prepared for the final group presentation.
In the reading report, students gave full play to their imagination to predict the next development of the scenario, or to rewrite the ending of the story. After reading the book, the students were either shocked by the ups and downs of the story, or sad for the protagonist's misfortune, or moved by the happy ending of the story. Some students were also confused about the content and raised their own questions, showing independent and in-depth thinking.
In the end, each group put together a presentation of their reading, discussion and thinking, and introduced the book to the class from the perspectives of author, plot, main characters, and thoughts. Some group members read a wonderful plot from the book in front of the whole class, while others showed their most impressive plot by making a video. The students' enthusiastic performance and passionate reading brought the audience back to the book again. All of them felt the charm of words and the pleasure of reading together.
The month-long book club came to an end in a warm atmosphere, and the students' interest in Chinese reading is still lingering. What is especially gratifying is that the students not only improved their Chinese expression and writing ability, but also fully practiced their teamwork, self-management, and public speaking abilities, moving closer to being all-around developed talents.
