Primary School Section G1-3: Reading Olympics
The cherry blossoms and begonia blossoms not only sounded the trumpet of spring, but also the trumpet of reading month. The students from grades 1 to 3 in Puxi, Pudong and Lingang campuses shared a reading feast in March. The charm of literature was attractive, the funny stories brought happy moments, and the Reading Olympics made everybody excited.
This year's reading theme was "Reading Olympics", with each class choosing countries to represent and participating in reading challenges. The goal? A grand and glorious gold medal, of course! By how? The students were given Reading Logs and encouraged to accumulate points through building a daily reading habit. The class scores will be added up and ranked for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in grades 1-3, and finally the gold, silver, and bronze prizes will be awarded based on the monthly totals.
There have also been a few short sprints too. Combining with Women’s Day, our students researched and read about their favourite FEMALE athletes to complete a fact files. In one of the more artistic events students were tasked with creating a collage of their favorite sport to share with their peers. We also had an “octathlon”! This is where students were tasked with reading different books to match 8 different criteria.
Of course, no Olympics would be completed without pageantry! Reading Month was kicked off with National Color Day. Each children wore a costume that represented the color of their "reading country". The children who wore green, white, and red colors made up Italy, and the children who wore black, red, and yellow represented Germany. Some children even painted their national flags on their faces. The feast continued.
In the middle of March, children dressed up as their favorite characters from the books and had a great time as the main characters. "Harry Potter" came over from Hogwarts, waving his magic wand and ready to show off his skills. "Dog man" with its unique blue hat brought us a funny story. And "Charlotte", the sleuth, wore the classic trench coat and holds a magnifying glass, ready to solve major cases. Some children even drew the hats and tails of the characters in the books themselves.
The end of March was also very busy. The first graders needed to convey an adjective by dressing up. A long dress is elegant, wearing pajamas is tired, holding a battle axe is brave, and being an animal is cute ...... There are many more adjectives for them to guess. Students and teachers showed off their creativity on Idiom Day as they tried their best to dress as an idiom and have others guess what idiom they were. Wearing big eyes, it must be "keep an eye on". With a cup on the shirt, it must be the idiom "Not my cup of tea".
Reading Month ends with an award ceremony. We are proud of our students for their passion for reading and applaud them for their hard work in reading. Whether they won the gold medal or not, everyone had fun reading, dressing up and learning! This feast of reading will continue to play in the elementary section.
