Puxi G4-5: World Fair
In the personal grwoth class in the afternoon of March 30, grades four and five of SHSID Puxi campus held the world fair, under the guidance of geopgraphy teachers. In the process, students looked beyond their textbooks and immersed themselves in a variety of activities, to understand and apply what they learned in real-life situations.
G4: Passengers on The Silk Road
From the start of the school year, the fourth-grade students have engaged in coursework on the 5 Themes of Geography: movement, region, human-environment interaction, location, and place. This semester, the focus is on movement — the exchange of goods and ideas! The 4th grade's Geography Fair used the theme of the ancient Silk Roads, taking the students on that journey in the halls of the Zhong Xing Building.
Before starting their journey, students were equipped with a passport designed to test their knowledge of the countries they traveled to. Test questions were related to famous locations, trade, and other interesting facts they picked up on. Classrooms were transformed to represent four countries along The Silk Road: Egypt, India, Turkey, and Greece. Upon exit, students were required to show their completed passports to receive a stamp.
The activities that they participated in were tailored to each country's role and contributions made during the historic Silk Road. Some students began their trek in the country that stood as the connecting point between Eurasia and Africa — Egypt! In the desert, students studied Egypt's long and varied history, built pyramids, and deciphered puzzles in different languages. Next, students visited Turkey — the gateway between the East and West, and partook in a trivia treasure hunt seeking lost answers to Turkey's rich history. Things got a little spicy over in India! There, students learned about the significance of India's central location along the spice route and their influence on the art and textile industries. They participated in hands-on activities like tapestry weaving and block printing. Afterward, they crossed the Mediterranean Sea and visited Greece, where they were informed that the country served as the maritime center of silk production and learned how to make togas! Students "re-entered China" with souvenirs from several countries, including tasty treats and keepsake photos!
G5: Around the World in 80 Minutes
This year’s World Fair was our most informative and creative yet! Our 5th grade students were given a region of the world according to their Homeroom class, and then chose a UNESCO World Heritage Site in that region to research and present in an informative and creative way. With this, students began to lay the groundwork for global citizenship and had the chance to demonstrate their geographical understanding.
Excitement buzzed in the air as students prepared their projects for display, such as posters, videos, models, brochures, paintings, and more filled each classroom. As they walked around the World Fair, students were asked to complete their passport questions on different sites from different regions to receive stamps. Many included detailed responses about what they learned and asked thought-provoking questions to the presenters.
Students were also able to vote for their favorite project in each region, which was a task that they took seriously. Since many projects included interactive elements such as board games, students were quite motivated to interact, learn, and get small prizes. This helped the students build relationships and understand how to communicate with different classmates.
Overall, students enjoyed the opportunity to show off their own work as well as getting to see the work of their peers! In working together to prepare and create this project, students not only developed communication skills, but also their time-management, planning, and collaboration abilities, which will help them to become more eligible independent learners and prepare them for the future.
