Grades 11: Assembly - Life of Santiago Ramon y Cajal

March 27, 2023

In a school assembly held on Thursday, March 23, students were reminded of the upcoming Global Citizens’ Day and other notices. The highlight of the event was a captivating speech by Eason, who shed light on the fascinating connection between art and science through the life of Santiago Ramon y Cajal.

Eason began his speech by introducing Santiago's childhood, who was born in 1852 and had a deep passion for the arts. Despite his father's disapproval, Santiago continued to pursue his dream of becoming a prominent artist.

Eason presented how Santiago won the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine in 1906. This was a surprise to many students who were listening. Eason then went on to share how Santiago's interests in nervous systems and sketching led him to establish a groundbreaking idea that the nervous system was made up of individual cells rather than a continuous net-like structure. Santiago used his artistic skills to observe neuron tissues under a microscope, combining multiple perspectives from drawing and photography.

Eason highlighted the significance of interdisciplinary studies, emphasizing that art can be a form of expression and inspiration to share discoveries and thoughts. He also reminded the audience that "just as science can inspire art, art can inspire science."

The assembly concluded with an applaud from the students who were left inspired and enlightened by Eason's meaningful speech. It was a reminder of the importance of exploring the intersection between art and science, and how the coexisting relationship between the two can lead to groundbreaking discoveries.
