G8 World: the Beauty of Culture

March 24, 2023

On March 23rd, the grade eight students of SHSID had a truly memorable activity: The World Fair. Students in the grade eight have been working a project assigned in their Geography classes to dive into culture, an aspect of human geography, and to prepare for World Fair.

Each homeroom was assigned three countries. Students tried to gather useful information about the many different aspects of the countries, including the material and folk culture that originates or is special to an area. After doing sufficient research, students showed what they have found using their creativity and aesthetic sense by creating an artifact. Meanwhile, students also transformed the classroom into a “museum” that displayed the various aspects of culture that belongs to the three countries, including fun activities and games. All the homerooms have also been decorated with global awareness goals, such as limiting food waste and reducing consumptions, allowing students to understand what being a responsible global citizen means.

The different “committees” within a homeroom worked together to plan everything out. This includes the groups that focused on decorations, food, activities, games, and more. Also, there were a few students stayed in their classrooms during the event, taking on responsibilities like hosting the games, selling the food, counting the vouchers, and helping to maintain order. Students exchanged cash for vouchers, which could be used as currency during the event. After participating in the various activities set up at the different homerooms, students could obtain up to three stamps. The students with large numbers of stamps would receive prizes.

“What is Culture?” is a complex question that students were presented with in Geography class. Our students are now able to answer this question with their experience, knowledge, and skills gained from the World Fair project, ranging from “how to make a figure using clay” to “why is this important and significant to the people of this culture”.
