Primary Subjects G1: We’re Environment Guardians!
In Grade 1 science classes, students have been learning about the 3R’s, recycle, reduce, and reuse. It is essential for us to remember these three words and to do each of them to protect the planet.
During the classes in week 4, we worked together as a class to put all our scrap paper into the recycling box. At the end of the week, the teachers estimated the number of pieces of paper, and there were roughly 14,000 pieces of paper from Puxi, Pudong and Lingang campuses. We then shredded this paper and soaked it in water over the weekend.
In science class of week 5, we used that wet paper to make our own sheets of paper. We first broke the damp paper into small pieces and then compacted it into a tray. We then left the paper to dry into a solid piece. Finally, all the classes made their own paper from the recycled ones.
This was a fun activity for our first graders to do, and it showed that materials could be recycled and reused to make new things. We’re all working on making our earth a better place by applying the 3R’s in our daily life.
