Pudong Campus: Let's Have a Circle Tour

March 16, 2023

On March 14, SHSID Pudong Campus held a special math carnival in PG class -- Pi day carnival. The teachers of each grade prepared a variety of pi activities for the students to participate in. Each grade level designed some math activities that were specific to their grade level, and the students rotated through the classroom in small groups (stations) to experience different activities. Let's go to each grade and follow the students through a fun pi day carnival!

The G1 teachers prepared activities such as Pi Puzzle and Pi Jumper for the students. The Pi Puzzle requires students to arrange the numbered puzzles in the order of pi to form a complete circle, while the Pi Jumper involves writing the pi numbers on a circle of colored paper and disrupting the order. The numbers were put on the floor and students had to jump to the corresponding numbers step by step in the correct order.

The activities in second grade were more varied, combining pi with coloring and adding fun activities such as writing poems and crafts. Pi City was a coloring game where students colored the corresponding number of squares according to the value of π. Piku was combined with the Japanese short poem Hiku, where students had to write poems according to 3, 1, or 4 syllables. For the Pi Bracelet activity, students did a craft in which they chose the corresponding number of beads of the same color according to the value of π and strung them in order. Besides, students enjoyed a few fun rounds of Go Fish, helping them to socialize while practicing their number words, matching skills, and logical reasoning abilities.

The third grade teachers combined the activities with independent learning. Fill in Pi by Pi requires students to first learn about π and then fill in the π symbol with the value of π. Pi Fraction involves fractions knowledge, where students shall color a circular pie and use fractions to represent the relationship between the part and the whole. Students were encouraged to observe and come up with reasonable ways to compare the size of fractions. Pi City Day & Night connected π to bar graphs, students needed to decide the length of each bar based on the number contained in π. They used gray and color to draw two different pictures, and when they finished coloring, some scaled buildings just appeared on the paper.

The fourth grade teachers prepared some logical thinking activities. In the activity Circular Logic, students calculated the value of each graph by looking at the sum of the horizontal and vertical circular patterns, and Pop Art requires students to use different colors in a certain pattern to decorate the π font and make a poster. 100 Digits of Pi asks students to collect the 100 decimal places of pi, count the number of repetitions, and make a bar graph. Pie Logic links π to the students' favorite pie, and the students followed the clues to find the different flavors of pie for each character in the problem solving questions.

The teachers from G5 applied the knowledge of pi to real life. Facts about Pi provided students with more information about pi and broadened their knowledge, while the Pi Necklace focused on the application of pi by multiplying different numbers with different colors of colored paper to make beautiful necklaces in numerical order. Pi Chain requires students to work together, starting with the number 3, multiplying it by 3.14 to get the value, rounding it up to an integer, and then multiplying it down to 3.14 to see how long their chains can last without making mistakes. Roll Pi Digits with Dice tested students’ memory of pi by rolling a dice to get the value and adjusting it to the correct value after the pi decimal point by adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing in any way they wanted.

At the end of the carnival, students enjoyed their favorite snack -- Orion Pie. In this interesting Pi day carnival, students gained happiness in the game and learned knowledge in the fun. It was truly a good annotation of what is learning from fun and educational activities.
