2023 Pi Day: A Feast of “DraMath”
Every year on March 14th, the High School Math Department from the international division elaborately designs wonderful activities to celebrate Pi Day, a day infused with the richness of mathematics. This year's Pi Day, a collaboration between the Math and Music departments, dramatized the charm of mathematics with the theme of "DraMath".
Since the beginning of the schoolyear, students have been teaming up to shoot math-themed drama productions. Some have restored the history of mathematics, interpreted mathematical theorems, and/or created fictional stories about mathematical concepts... In this project, students cooperated with each other and did research together. Both the editing and filming process were excellent opportunities for the students to get closer to the development of mathematics and bring in lots of fun.
On March 14th at noon, students actively participated in math games elaborately designed by the Polytechnic Dog Student Club, such as “Math Nouns Crossword” and “Cube Arrangement”, at the Zhentao Building, with the exciting atmosphere overwhelming the students as they gathered at the scene. Math problems were no longer restricted to rigorous words on test paper for they could also be interesting and engaging. The pie (π) star built by students with Rubik's cubes, fluent recitation of the last twenty or so digits of pi, and their hand-drawn pictures with numbers hidden all reflected the witty expression that math brings.
The math classroom activity on March 14th was a paradigm of the performative nature of "DraMath". Students not only enjoyed the video clips of the highlighted drama works from each grade, but also immersed themselves into the performance-based math games designed by teachers from the Math department. In the game "Follow the Lead", students used their bodies to act out various image transformations and complete the image reflections involved in functions based on a story containing mathematical terms given on the screen. In the game, "Act and Guess", students had to physically perform the information they received to the next person. The message was a five-word math-related phrase. Students at the end of the line needed to guess the answer according to the performance that was passed along. This game was not easy, but students on and off stage were very engaged in trying. While their humorous dramatized interpretation and coordination made people laugh, it also subconsciously put students themselves into the experience of visualizing abstract mathematical concepts.
Besides, this year's Pi Day had a surprise! Five students from each grade were randomly selected to receive a chance to talk with the principal over lunch! As the grand prize settled on, the atmosphere of the event was brought to a climax! With the students cheering, we introduced the start of the "DraMath" follow-up events! Students' outstanding drama works were offered the chance to perform on stage during MIX Day events in June later this term, guided by professional teachers from the Music department! Stay tuned!
