Grade 9: Harvest from the Labor Week

March 10, 2023

On March 6, Labor Week at SHSID officially began. After the opening ceremony, a series of community service activities was initiated.

First off, groups of students worked at the school supermarket. The two groups would maintain the clean environment of the supermarket and sort out the trash separately. They encouraged their peers to take care of their trash and not litter to maintain a clean and safe environment, improving the school atmosphere overall. This served as a powerful way to make students realize the importance of throwing away one’s trash and not leaving trash behind for others to clean up after. Volunteers also worked at the cafeteria, where they assisted with cleaning and tidying chairs, further ensuring a clean environment.

Next, two groups of students each patrolled the school gates. Their main task was to maintain order at the entrances of the school gates and to verify the identity of incoming people. This way made the school feel safe and orderly. It also gave the students a sense of responsibility as well as a sense of duty to the school and pride to be able to guard its main gates.

The library is an important and powerful part of a school, and as such, a group of volunteers went there every lunch to sort books and desks out. They sorted and added newly returned books to the library and maintained the quiet and peaceful atmosphere of the library. Volunteers also helped with taking out the trash and patrolling in XM and ZT Buildings. The workforce of over a dozen people not only ensured maximum efficiency with tasks but also spread more awareness of just how much work it takes to keep the buildings clean.

In conclusion, Labor Week at SHSID was greatly beneficial and impactful on the school environment and its image, with dozens of volunteers simultaneously working each day to maintain a better SHSID. Apart from the direct result of hard work, Labor Week was also influential in many ways. Over the course of the week, many different people volunteered and personally experienced each task, which was important for one's self-growth. The students would learn the craft that goes into each role, and more importantly, understand and empathize with the workers hard at work every day to better the lives of students, and to make learning enjoyable. We must learn to empathize, always think in consideration of others, and act accordingly. This way, everyone at the school will have a more enjoyable experience.
