High School Chinese Department: the "Whole-Book Reading" Program Discussion

March 10, 2023

"Is the whole-book reading program valuable and feasible at SHSID? What is the necessity and difficulty? How can we attract students to participate in the program efficiently and happily?" High school Chinese department teachers gathered together to discuss these questions in the afternoon of March 8.

At the beginning of the seminar, high school Chinese teaching and research department leader, Mr. Zhuang, gave a general introduction of the implementation of the whole-book reading program in local schools, and explained why we should explore the significance of whole-book reading at SHSID. Then he raised a question: How to do it?

Some teachers said that the current IB course is the whole-book reading system. In addition to reading the text itself, different forms of supplementary tasks, such as reading analysis, topic discussion, artistic form analysis, and script interpretation, will also be arranged according to the text length and text style to make the whole-book reading system more vivid and easy to implement.

Some teachers also mentioned that when students read a whole book, they are very likely to get tired as it’s a long time. So, teachers should arrange well teaching plans and let students participate more in class. For example, when learning Xiangtu Zhongguo, teachers can let students share what they are learning in one chapter and then give supplementary explanation. Another teacher said that the selection of reading materials is very important. For students of different levels, teachers should choose different books according to their Chinese level. All members gathered their minds and spoke freely, and made full and reasonable exchanges on the value and necessity of reading whole books in the seminar.

Finally, Mr. Zhuang made a summary of the day's seminar. He said whole-book reading has irreplaceable value at SHSID. Teachers should learn from the experience happening at local schools and follow suit so that our students will develop by participating in a lively whole-book reading program as well.
