Middle School Biology Department: 6th Graders Explored Plant Structures

March 10, 2023

Since the beginning of the semester, sixth-grade students have been learning about plants. In order to help them understand it in a deeper way, the teachers arranged an experiment related to plants. On March 8th. Students went to YiFu Building to conduct the investigation.

The first part was to make a temporary slide of onion epidermal cells and observe them under a microscope. When the clear cell nuclei and cell walls appeared in front of them, the students became very excited and called over classmates to take a look. Students thoroughly experienced and enjoyed using the microscopes. They further understood the structure of plant cells from a zoomed-in perspective.

The second experiment was to cause the petals of carnations to change color. This experiment deepened the students' understanding of the role of vascular tissue in moving materials throughout the bodies of plants. After a few hours of waiting, colorful petals began to appear. Students described their colors as taro purple, cherry red, salmon pink, and more.

This experiment was really fruitful, and now students are looking forward to the next experiments involving dissecting animals.
