High School Biology Department: Student Activity - Natural Selection

March 7, 2023

"Evolution" is the teaching focus of ninth-grade biology classes, from the proposal of relevant scientific ideas in the 18th Century, to Darwin's voyage of discovery, to eventual publication of The Origin of Species. Human beings have explored a great deal regarding where we and other species come from and how nature has created a prosperous world with its diverse environmental pressure.

In order to let students better understand how the invisible hand of "natural selection" promotes the process of evolution, on March 3, 2023, the ninth-grade biology classes held an activity class with the theme of "natural selection". With the theoretical knowledge learned in the class, the students first made some woolly worms and proposed their own experimental hypotheses. Then the students were divided into two groups: one group randomly placed the worms on the lawn and the other group "preyed" the insects they could find within a specified time. And in the gentle spring light, the students playing different roles were all devoted and fully engaged, hoping to gain the upper hand in this battle for survival. At the end of the activity, everyone returned to the classroom to analyze and summarize their conclusions by counting and comparing the data. In the process, students deepened their understanding of concepts such as "natural selection", "fitness", and "evolution" in the lively discussion, and also strengthened the application of scientific research procedures.
