G4-8 | Fire Drill

March 3, 2023

The campus is a place where students live and study, but it is densely populated and has many flammable and combustible materials. In the event of an accident, it will pose a serious threat to the lives and property of students and teachers. How to prevent fires on campus, what to do in case of a fire and what are the specific requirements for escape are all compulsory lessons in safety education every semester. In order to further enhance everyone's safety awareness and emergency response capabilities, teachers and students from Grade 8 and Grade 4-7 of SHSID Puxi Campus conducted fire drills in the afternoon of 23 February and 2 March 2023 at Zhen Tao Building and Zhong Xing Building respectively.

Before the fire drill, teachers emphasized the fire evacuation plan and behavior requirements, including cover mouth and nose with arms, quickly walk outside of the building but no pushing or running. Teachers also asked students to reflect why we need fire drill every semester, and students said that we need repeated practice to form conditioned reflex so that we can quickly react under emergent situations.

At 2:30 pm, the moment the alarm sounded, all students and teachers immediately stopped what they were doing and left the building at the first opportunity via the pre-arranged evacuation route. During the entire evacuation process, no one ran or pushed or jostled, and every student was calm, unhurried, organised, and quickly made their way to the designated gathering place. Class teachers counted the number of students in their classes and reported the evacuation on cards of the appropriate colour. Afterwards, under the guidance of homeroom teachers, students returned to their classrooms in an orderly manner.

After the fire drill, teachers continued the fire safety education. With some staggering data, students were deeply intimidated by the danger of fire. Teachers further reminded students of the fire safety on campus and in daily lives, including the usage of microwave, burning candle and other inflammable items.

Students also watched a video about firemen’s daily jobs and routines, which helped them know how arduous the job is. It taught students a lesson that only by taking care of one’s own daily lives and nipping the danger in the bud can we show responsibility of oneself and the society.

The fire safety lesson made everyone aware of the importance of not panicking and responding positively to emergencies, as well as the necessity to constantly improve their resilience and self-rescue skills in daily life. In the future, the school will continue to focus on raising students' awareness of precautionary measures, so that safety education can become a strong fortress to protect us all.
