Grade 9: Freshman Project Showcase

February 23, 2023

With the theme of "Who are we at SHSID", the 9th grade Freshman Project of SHSID provides a platform for students entering high school to explore themselves and provide a service to SHSIDers. This allows the 9th graders an opportunity to learn how to manage various arrangements in order to find the ultimate sense of belonging within the community. This school year, the Freshman Project was completed in an exceptional manner through the strong support of the 9th grade group and the House Mentors. The House Mentors provided comprehensive guidance for the student teams by providing inspiration for questions, creating surveys, and finally completing the project as a team. The students communicated with the mentor regularly; actively reported the progress of the project and sought guidance and feedback from the mentor.

On the first day of school, the students have just finished their winter vacation and are gearing up-preparing to present the results of nearly four months of hard work-each team will share their Freshman Project. The air was buzzing with anxiety and excitement as students discussed with their peers and made final arrangements for their presentations.

All too quickly, the time came to the sixth class of the day-CAS. Different teams made their way into the corresponding classrooms to carry out their presentations. Some went easily and lightheartedly, others with their stomachs twisting inside out, and under the observation of fellow peers and judges, the group members delivered their presentations. However it turned out, students always got a round of applause and reassuring glances from their fellow peers and teammates. In the end, after much consideration, the judges selected the nine most outstanding projects to present to teachers and students of all grades in the next session of CAS.

In the Lecture Hall, the students were introduced by their team leaders and were able to listen to lectures: about the anxiety young people face about their appearance, the animal groups that thrive on the SHSID campus, how the ninth graders should maintain motivation for their hobbies, and how people are not aware of the layout of Zhen Tao Building- despite learning there every day. A series of detailed and well-organized posters were also displayed for the audience to visually represent the members’ efforts. The students benefited a lot by sharing their Freshman Projects. Each group chose a unique topic, which greatly broadened the audience's perspective and also brought attention to problems that have been overlooked.

In the Assembly class on February 21st, the Freshman Project Award Ceremony was held in the Lecture Hall. With the eyes of approval and applause, the Freshman Project ended successfully. It is believed that this activity has helped the students to realize that as a high school student, they have the ability to contribute to the well-being of the campus and society as well as to pursue their interests and hobbies. Through this freshman project’s topic, “Who are we at SHSID”, students have been able to find their interests. We hope that students will be able to continue their support for SHSID while continuing in their own pursuits.
