High School Physics Department: All-Hands-on-Board Playing with Electrostatics
On the afternoon of December 16, Ms. Wang Yan, from the high school physic department, led Grade 10 class to hold an open class with the theme of "methods of charging" in Room 213, Yifu Building. Many teachers from the physics department and other subjects came to attend the class.
During the dry autumn and winter months, people often encounter this phenomenon: a crackling sound accompanied by blue light as they get dressed or undress; a tingling sensation in the fingertips during a handshake; "floating up'' hair while combing. These phenomena are caused by the "static electricity" produced by friction. In this open class, Ms. Wang led the students to explore other methods of charging besides friction.
When exploring charging by conduction, Ms. Wang introduced the van der Graaf generator to the students as a static charge source and tested the positivity of both ends of the balls with balloons. Next, Ms. Wang invited a few brave volunteers to experience the seemingly thrilling, but very safe way of charging through the human body. In the exploration of charging by induction, Ms. Wang guided the students to skillfully use the electroscopes, as well as cans and other common products in life, and successfully visualized induction. Finally, the students exchanged and discussed the advantages and disadvantages of static electricity for human beings.
This class was rich in exploratory experiments and inspiring question design, giving full play to the initiative of students; The teacher guided the students' curiosity and desire to explore constantly. The class activities with full participation also left a deep impression on the students and a good learning experience.
The success of this open class cannot be achieved without the joint efforts of all physics teachers. Before every open class, the Physics department would hold a class preparation group meeting. Everyone would pool their wisdom together, so that the sparks of thinking collided with the charm and splendor of physics, which was also a precious opportunity for every teacher to learn and grow.
