Middle School Biology Department: G6 Yogurt-making Experiment

December 14, 2022

G6 science students have recently learned about the morphology and structure of bacteria and their important roles in nature. Some bacteria are harmful, while others are beneficial to humans. Harmful bacteria may cause food to spoil or infections. Alternatively, beneficial bacteria can be used to purify water and produce food and medicine. Yogurt is a classic example of a food product made through bacterial fermentation.

To help students better understand what they have learned, the teachers arranged a yogurt-making experiment. Under the guidance of the teachers, students added milk and a powdered starter culture into the cup and stirred them afterwards. Next, they put the solution into the yogurt maker to start fermentation. 10 hours later, our students finally got their results on December 13! Many students compared their yogurts with classmates and exchanged experience. Some of them also started to think about making yogurt for their family at home. Through the experiment, students have gained a better understanding of the utility of bacteria and the fermentation process.
