Middle School Math Department: G6 Fun Activity—Mathematician Comic Contest

December 14, 2022

Over the past three weeks, sixth graders have been actively involved in an enjoyable mathematical activity, the Mathematician Comic Contest. This activity was creative and interesting, which aims to provide a better sense of math knowledge through historical inquiry and artistic comic drawing.

In this activity, students were asked to hand-draw 4 to 18 cartoons and create portraits of mathematicians. In these cartoons, students needed to describe the interesting events in the life of a famous mathematician. After completing the drawings, students were required to upload their works through LC’s online platform to participate in the competition, as well as to achieve the voting for the final prize.

Simple cartoons contain a variety of creative ideas. This activity not only tempered students' creativity, and enhanced their understanding of the origin of mathematical knowledge, but also tested their painting skills. For students, the creation process was full of fun. They were both fascinated by the humor of the comic and excited about learning mathematics.

In addition, the contest enhanced the connection between math and art and strengthened students' interest in learning math through fun math history. Each student was also able to showcase their unique personality and style through this activity.
