Social Science Department: Business Pioneer Case Challenge Series Workshop

December 13, 2022

Over two sessions of activities and sharing across two Thursdays (December 1 and 8) , students were invited to learn about the world of business through the structure of Business Pioneer Case Challenge. Business Pioneer Case Challenge, also known as BPC, is a very prestigious business competition that is powered by Harvard Business Publishing. With direct cases and study materials provided by Harvard Business School and other top universities around the world. Students are able to interact with the most recent and realistic information of world class companies with a large variety of industries. Through analyzing business case studies, participating in business simulations, and creating one's own innovative business plan students can learn business through “doing” rather than “learning”.

On the two Thursdays, Ms. Ye Zhen of the department invited Brandon, BPC Business Competition Club leader, from 11th grade to share about BPC and guide a mock activity for students to experience the beauty of business. The first session started off with some background information about BPC. Some interesting guiding questions, like “How does Xicha make sure its flavor is the same across the whole country?”etc., were then posed to initiate thinking and discussions between the students. Afterwards, students were taught the basic structure of a business model and some tips to how to break down and analyze a business case study. At the end, the case for Chinese sports brand Li Ning (李宁) were given to students to read and prepare for the next session.

The second session begun with the comparison between“Perrier”and “Pure Life” (normal bottled water), both brands are under the same company Nestle but how come one can be sold at 10RMB (Perrier), 5 times the price of Pure Life (2RMB), and there are still people willing to buy it? Economics teachers and BPC club members led the open discussion. Students were also given time to freely share their thoughts and discuss on this fascinating phenomenon. Moving on to the core of the session, students were put in the discussion groups to break down the Li Ning case and identify the answers to the questions, “how and why Li Ning chose this specific group of target customers.” The sessions ended with students actively engaging in activities and enjoying the process.

As always, the Social Science Department encourages more students to apply what's learned in economics and business classes to the understanding of real life business practices and the operation of global economy.
