Grades 11-12: 2022 Career Day Held

December 9, 2022

The annual Career Day is an in-depth exchange between parents and students about their future careers, and on December 7, a total of 22 parents and guests from Grades 11 and 12 came to campus to give in-person talks to students about the current status and prospects of various industries that may interest them, as well as hunting down careers.

The parents and guests gave the lectures covering a wide range of industries, including energy, law, investment consulting, cultural exchange, biomedical, computer and information technology, fashion design, book editing, geography and mapping, environmental technology, psychological education, and physical exercise. An investment executive who has been working on Wall Street for many years introduced students on how to find a job on Wall Street; a collector who is an independent curator discussed with the students whether cultural exhibitions need to show the freshness of technology or the content of drawing on the past and connoting the present in the virtual era with the rise in metaverse technology. The chief doctor of the Shanghai International Peace Maternity and Child Health Hospital introduced “The Mission of Doctors” in this physically and emotionally challenging line of work.

Special guest Jiang Dahuan, former national rowing champion, also gave a lively lesson on rowing to the students starting from the origins of this niche sport, then its characteristics and development, all the way to the cultural qualities represented by the sport: self-discipline, teamwork, and toughness. The illustrated lectures, together with numerous videos of rowing from world-renowned universities, kept the students listening. Some students are studying rowing and, after listening to the lectures, further deepened their love for the sport; more students were popularized for the first time, and many also showed a strong interest, not only in rowing itself, but in sports management and sports promotion exemplified by students asking questions enthusiastically and feeling fulfilled in learning more about the sport and sports in general.

The lectures of the parents and guests and the real insights and profound reflections of the students benefited everyone a lot, especially the love for each profession that was expressed in them. As one of the parents said in his speech, "The career path is not a test; there is no standard answer", as the most important thing is to find and choose a career goal that you love and are willing to work for. It is worth mentioning that the school also invited SHSID alumni to this career day, such as the class of '09 graduates who worked as training and sales supervisors at the Shanghai Children's Technology Camp, and the class of '11 graduates who returned to China to start their own pet adoption platform. They selflessly shared their personal practices and experiences on their career paths with the younger students, which deeply touched and inspired them.

Ms. Bao Yongshi's speech was full of love and she opened her speech with five friends (Sober, Beta, Simba, Gamma, and Summer), from her university life to her experiences in the advertising industry and to ultimately the creation of her own public welfare stray cat adoption program. She interspersed her speech with many interesting stories about her career and many pictures of cute cats, and the students were eager to listen to her and communicate with each other. Such a speech, on the one hand, made everyone understand the difficulty of self-employment, but also inspired everyone to strongly feel the charm of hobby-driven entrepreneurship.

A lot of positive reflections on Career Day talk were generated. 'What I loved most about Allen’s lecture was that it’s so related to what I learned in class. From his experiences with machine learning and portfolio management, I was able to learn about an application of the normal distribution and Pascal’s triangle in a real-life setting. It was also really illuminating to hear him talk about his experiences learning at SHSID.'

As the eleventh and twelfth graders are at the critical stage of choosing their college majors and subjects, the Career Day was arranged at the right time to not only help them understand the latest requirements of knowledge structure, academic literacy, and overall ability for related careers in high school as well as college, but also feel the inspiration and motivation from the parents, the alumni and the other guests in this sincere sharing session. Many thanks again to all the guests who came to share on and for Career Day!
