G4 Math: New Year Party Project Sparkles Math Classes

December 8, 2022

As New Year approaches, the Chinese New Year's party, which G4 graders have planned for a month, finally came to an end. During the holiday season, students have been working in groups to make surveys, plan and design, and attract more guests to the grand new year party to welcome the upcoming new year.

To finish the project, students made use of the newly learned knowledge about surveys and samples to design and carried out the survey in the grade. They asked G4 students’ preferences for party length, games and souvenirs to decide what would be contained in their party.

After collecting data from the survey, students worked in groups to analyse data and use appropriate charts to represent the results. They made pictographs to show the most popular party souvenirs, made bar charts to show the party games that potential guests enjoy most, and line plots to show the appropriate length of party clearly. After analysing the results, student buyers began to make lists of souvenirs and games. They carefully selected merchants, compared prices and made budgets.

Having decided on the party theme, games, length and souvenirs, students began to design the floor plan for the venue. In addition to the receptions, food counters and game counters, students have also designed a variety of rooms for guests, including stairs for going up and down, warm rooms for guests to stay overnight, a wide football field and some outdoor spaces... Game-themed parties were designed in the shape of game consoles and Kuromi-themed party was designed to be filled with Kuromi elements...

A successful party cannot be held without a well-designed poster. In order to attract more guests, posters were featured with the highlights of the party. Some posters were distinguished with plenty of games while others were highlighted with special souvenirs, such as kittens, puppies and Lego sets.

Through the project-based learning of the Chinese New Year party, students worked in groups and designed a grand New Year party by cooperating with each other according to the knowledge of surveys, samples and graphs, combined with the experience in daily life and the content of other subjects. Students planted the seeds of hope in spring, worked hard in summer, reaped golden fruits in autumn, embraced the snow-covered winter, and enjoyed the feast of math learning.
