Puxi Grade 1: The Beauty in Chinese Names

December 8, 2022

In the first week of December, the Grade One Students were going to have their first Chinese project presentation. Students chose a character from their own name, asked their parents about the beautiful meaning in the name and drew a picture accordingly.

This week, stepping into the Grade One hallway was like being in a gallery. Each art painting highlights the creator's imagination, telling us stories about different Chinese characters. Look at this painting of the character "Yan", the winding road and the long-standing river show parents’ hope that their children can ride the wind and waves in their life and create infinite possibilities. Looking at this painting of the character "Xi", the red sun is just about to rise from the east. The first ray of sunshine in the morning brings hope to the earth as well as the best wishes of parents to their children. While hoping the child can have a bright future, parents also expect their child to bring warmth to those around them. Walking down the hallway, there are lots of colorful paintings, carrying parents’love for their children.

The children also introduced the story of their names to the whole class through the stage of Chinese Show & Tell class. Using the knowledge they learned in Chinese class, they introduced the radicals, structures, and meanings of the Chinese characters in their names and explained their paintings and the best wishes of their parents enshrined in their names. Each of them spoke clearly and logically, and the audience listened with respect.

Through their creation and display, not only have the children’s expression skills been exercised, but they have also had a deeper understanding of their own names. In the process of asking the meaning in their names, they have felt their parents’ expectations and love for them.
