Pudong Campus G1: The Beautiful Chinese Characters

In order to encourage the students to feel the unique beauty of Chinese characters in their daily life, the teachers from grade one in SHSID Pudong Campus assigned a special Chinese project for the students to do -- The Beauty of Chinese Characters. This project was divided into two parts: making a poster and doing a presentation. Students needed to choose a Chinese character from their name and write it neatly on the poster. Then, they needed to communicate with their parents about the meaning of the characters. Finally, students would draw a picture of the specific Chinese character according to their meanings.

After finishing the poster, it was the presentation part. Students brought their "paintings" to school and did a presentation in Chinese class on Dec 5th. Every student did a very good job and impressed the teachers a lot. One student introduced the character "yang (sea)" which is related to water; another student who has the character “lan” in her name explained the relationship between "lan hua (orchid)" and kindness personality. What impressed the teacher most was that one student used an ancient poem to describe and explain the meaning of the character “cui” in her name.

After the presentation, students said that they were enjoying the beautiful and creative pictures of Chinese characters a lot. The special project not only deepens students' understanding of Chinese characters but also makes them feel the elegance and beauty of it.
