High School Biology Department: 2022 Shanghai High School Biology Workshop

From December 3 to December 4, 2022, the biology teachers of SHSID participated in the "2022 Shanghai High School Biology Workshop". The workshop was also attended by students from Shanghai High School and biology teachers from SHS and other schools.

From non-invasive screening to viral nucleic acid sequencing, gene sequencing technology has been widely used in various fields, allowing human beings to understand themselves and the world better by following the conserved genetic code. The theme of this workshop is "deep learning based on experimental courses", the workshop is divided into two parts, the first part is the experimental practice, including DNA extraction, concentration determination, DNA library construction, product purification and DNA nano-ball preparation, and sequencing on the machine. The second part was sequencing data analysis, in which the participants conducted phenotype-genotype association analysis based on base polymorphisms at specific loci. When the participants saw that the hands-on experimental and biochemical analysis results accurately revealed their "factory settings", they were amazed and actively discussed the results with other participants.

The workshop provided participants with a valuable opportunity to get hands-on experience in the whole process of high-throughput sequencing experiments. For the teachers of the SHSID, the training course also helped them to further understand, learn and practice genetics and genetic engineering-related knowledge, and provided learning experience for the subsequent development of new course based on core literacy.
