G4&5: Gotta Read ‘em all --English Reading Month

December 5, 2022

From T-shirt design contests to “Pokémon battles” to storytelling competitions, grades 4 and 5 at Puxi campus have been extremely busy over this past month! The students had been going head to head in a tough class-versus-class Reading Month competition. Each class was given a Pokémon which they needed to help evolve and train for battle. Each week their Pokémon would be able to evolve if the class reached a combined total of 2000 (G4) or 3000 (G5) reading minutes. The children were also given a weekly reading related challenge, such as character Pokémon card creation and writings about real-life Pokémon. These challenges combined with reading minutes helped the classes battle each other and move on to the next round. The students seemed highly engaged and motivated as they moved through each week. However, only one class per grade could emerge victorious: class 4(2) with a total of 5,924 points and class 5(1) with a total of 5,285 points. Each grade also had some exceptional readers: Renee from 5-2 & Adwin 4-2 (1st) , Alan from 5-2 & Victoria from 4-6 (2nd), Estella from 5-1 & Tianyao 4-1 (3rd).

Our reading month concluded with our annual Storytelling Competition! The fourth-graders performed their scary stories while the fifth-graders got creative with a wide range of narratives. The stories were full of suspense and excitement! First place was awarded to Tianyao 4-1 & Youran 5-5, second place to Fendike 4-5 & Althea 5-5, and third place to Tiffany 4-4 & Liam 5-1. Fantastic job to all the contestants!

This English Reading Month activity once again ignited the love of reading among the fourth and fifth graders and improved their English literacy skills. We hope that our students will continue to swim in the ocean of knowledge and maintain their love of reading!
