History and Geography Department: Romance VS History - A Comparative Analysis of Historical Sources Activity

December 2, 2022

Recently, both AP History for 10th grade and Chinese History for 11th grade have been engaged in a comparative analysis of historical sources for both Romance and History. In the 10th grade AP History class, students compared a set of myths and historical sources about the Spanish conquest of the Americas to find out the differences and discussed them, while in the 11th grade Chinese History class, students focused on some key events and characters selected by the teacher from The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. They read excerpts from The Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Records of the Three Kingdoms to compare and analyze the differences between the two and engaged in a "True and False Story of the Three Kingdoms" class activity.

Literary works, myths and legends, and serious historical works are not incompatible. Popular stories provide a rich source of interest and imagination for the public and attract more people to learn more about history, while historical materials provide a relatively reliable reference standard. Combining the two different materials reveals more about the complexity of historical events and their interpretation by later generations. Historical analysis, as an important method of learning history, has been frequently used and guided by teachers in the history classroom to encourage students to fully participate in it.
