Grade 9: CAS - Freshman Project Discussion
During CAS class on Wednesday, November 23rd, SHSID 9th-graders gathered in their respective TA houses to finalize their topics and plans for their freshman projects. Focusing on the central question of 'Who Are We at SHSID?', the freshman project is a schoolyear-long assignment meant to be finished in a group of 6-8 students. Groups are established within TA houses, which separate students based on general interests and passions. The purpose of the project is to help students identify how they take part in and contribute to a particular aspect of the school’s community, as well as the impact that the community has had on them. They are encouraged to show their understanding as creatively as they can.
Prior to November 23rd, students had already formed groups and decided the topics they hoped to pursue, which they used to fill out both group and personal research plans to show why they think their project will be significant and how they plan to finish it. In class, they were finally able to show their work to their TA house mentors, who approved their topics and advised them on how to proceed. Most of the time was still left to the students to discuss amongst themselves their plans for their projects. Overall, it was a very fruitful double-period block for all SHSID freshmen.
