G1-3 Math Week: Enjoy the Fun of Math & Let your Imagination Run Wild
Do you know how math is used in life? How important is math? From November 21st to November 25th, children from grades 1 to 3 in Puxi, Pudong, and Lingang campuses fully used their brains and had a hearty journey of exploring the secrets of math.
The "little mathematicians" in the first grade have prepared a grand "party" to celebrate the "50 school days" event!
On the first day, the group members arranged the "party" schedule intensively. The opening ceremony was first, and then the wonderful magic show. After watching the performance, we definitely needed to arrange a delicious meal. Having a water-balloon toss in the afternoon couldn’t be more enjoyable... In this way, students used the knowledge they have learned about time to arrange activities, calculate the amount of time, draw the activity time on the clock face, and mark the activity date on the calendar.
Logos for celebrations were essential. On the second day, the G1 students used various shapes provided by the teacher to spell out the number 50. They also used fractions to name the proportion of each shape in the entire shape. The 50 made of colorful shapes seemed to be their overflowing happiness.
Of course, for important events we must be dressed up to attend! On the third day, the children acted as little designers to prepare costumes for the event. They clearly listed all the possibilities of each clothing collection in an organized list, and then worked together to cut and color. After a while, the paper bodies all put on gorgeous clothes. When the children's little heads were attached to their matching clothes, the whole class was delighted.
Thursday and Friday were the results display time, and the team members summarized the results of the three days on a poster. We can tell how proud and happy they are in the photos!
This week is a week for the Grade One students to use the mathematics skills they learned in 50 days to solve life problems, and it is also a week for them to practice their ability to cooperate in groups!
During Math Week, the second-graders were building a dream school for our new friend Mathie! Students worked in groups of 4-5, each group selected a scene from the school and redesigned it with solid figures.
Lo and behold, the new library was bright, and the walls were dotted with their beloved stickers – Ultraman by boys and diamonds made of net of rhombus by girls. The decoration was very attractive. Every bookshelf in the library was different, some being box shelves made of cubes, some being ice cream shelves made of cones....
The group over there was immersed in the design of the auditorium, and since it was an auditorium, of course, there must be many lights. The students made colorful cylinder lanterns out of plasticine boxes, and placed cuboid chairs on the ground, with alien and animal themes.
The most important thing in the school is the classroom, and the classroom built for Mathie was unique. The entire classroom was no longer a cube. Some were coke cans, some were rugby themed, and some were directly designed as spaceships, with seats and tables being suspended in mid-air.
Like the students, Mathie's favorite place is the playground. The little architects have created exclusive swings, slides and swimming pools for Mathie, and also prepared a lot of "three-dimensional solid figure friends", such as rectangular prism lambs, cube robots, and cylindrical elephants. Who can have fun with friends without the love for the playground?
The solid figures in the world of mathematics were transformed into various school furnishings in the hands of second-graders, full of their expectations for school, waiting for Mathie's arrival.
With the advancement of science and technology and the development of civilization, human beings continue to explore the vast universe and successfully land on many planets. This week, the third graders set up the M22H Planetary Exploration Project. The five teams of "Food, Food, Housing, Transportation and Play" would use their professional math knowledge to build a dream home on the planet.
On the first day of activities, the children worked together, and the ingenious and unique team logos jumped off the paper through dexterous little hands and small Lego pieces.
On the second day, five small expert teams held a "high-level meeting" in the group. They circled the vast coordinate map of the M22H planet, and tall buildings covering all aspects of future life rose from the ground.
In the following two days, everyone began intensive market research within the whole class. According to the topic selected by the expert team, the opinions of every future resident were sought. The bar graph, line graph and many others were used to organize the data in an orderly manner, and then the graphs were interpreted for abstract analysis, so as to guide the team's further actions.
On the last day, the five small expert teams of "basic clothing, housing, transportation and play" introduced their grand blueprint and implementation plan to the entire project team members, and the classroom burst into applause. Light-years away, there was a lot of work waiting to be done, and the little warriors with clever calculations, took math as a powerful tool, and set off bravely!
Math is not just abstract knowledge that exists in books, it is everywhere and is closely related to our lives. During this math week, the children held the golden key to solve problems, opened doors to wisdom, and once again felt the charm of math in happiness.
