G8: Career Day

November 28, 2022

Have you ever wondered what you would want to be when you grow up? To many students, the term “career” might seem distant and irrelevant to their current lives. But actually, it is the exact opposite. If one is able to discover his or her ambitions and potentials at a young age, thus preparing early for that field, this would greatly influence and benefit his or her future.

To allow students to begin thinking and planning about their career choices, the eighth grade invited three distinguished guests to host the Career Day Youth Development class on 24th November. They are Mr. Li Juhua, quantitative investment manager; Dr. Lei Ming, professor and researcher; and lawyer Ms. Yang Min. Being at the top of their field, the guests not only possess strong professional skills, but also have had plentiful career experiences.

On today’s stage, they converted complicated and profound knowledge into everyday language understandable by middle school students. Mr. Li Juhua introduced common financial events. From recognising different currencies to estimating the cost for future college, students quickly mastered a lot of financial concepts. Dr. Lei Ming introduced the relevant professional knowledge of life sciences from the eternal theme of science: truth and beauty. Ms. Yang Min began with the current situation of the profession of lawyer and introduced how to begin a career as a Chinese lawyer.

From their lectures and presentations, students realised that seemingly far-away topics are actually present in many aspects of life, but they have not paid close attention to those details. After listening to this Career Day lecture, many students now view different careers with a new perspective, having broadened their views and introduced more options of job choices. More importantly, the experiences and lessons conveyed by the guests also presented the importance of students planing their future early, as well as cherishing their days as a student when they can learn without much distraction.

Last but not least, a sincere thank you to the distinguished guests for bringing the eighth graders such a fruitful and thoughtful YD session. Undoubtedly, all the students have taken away many ideas from today’s lectures. Here’s to always learning, growing and discovering your wonderful selves!
