Grades 11-12: English Speech Competition

November 28, 2022

On Wednesday afternoon, November 23, the English Speech Contest for the 11th and 12th grades was held in the Grand Auditorium. The theme of the speech was "To make the world an environmentally better place", and nine contestants from both grades one by one expressed their ideas. Based on careful preparation and active rehearsal, the speakers elaborated on global environmental changes from different perspectives.

Some students were optimistic and believed that they could eventually change the deteriorating environment through their personal efforts, while others, from a more critical point of view, suggested that global environmental change is an excessive discourse by large corporations to escape their responsibilities, and hence, individual efforts are futile. The students' speeches were short, but the content was well thought out and brought different inspirations to the audience.

This was the first round of speeches and Mr. Moffat commented on the content and presentation skills of the students, helping the speakers to summarize and improve as well as being a live lecture for all the Year-11 and -12 students listening in the audience, all of whom benefited greatly. To ease the tension of the competition, L2D also brought a joyful dance performance, "La La Land". The judges also took the opportunity to rank the first round of speeches and chose the top three best speakers. From there, the competition moved on to the second round.

The second round of the speech contest was in the form of improvisation, and the theme given on the spot was: Honesty is the best quality. Without any preparation, the three contestants, with their deep knowledge accumulation and adaptability, spoke eloquently, bringing their vivid speeches to all the judges and students. The judges decided the first-, second-, and third-place finishers. The whole process and the excellent performances of the contestants won everyone's praise and warm applause.

The one-and-a-half-hour English speech contest came to a successful end. Congratulations to all the winners and participants! It was a valuable learning and communication experience, and we also encourage all the 11th- and 12th-grade students to think positively and express themselves bravely!
