The 6th SHS & SHSID Bilingual Debate Final Successfully Ended
In the past 5 years, SHS & SHSID Bilingual debate has become a highly anticipated student activity. Especially, the final round of each year was extremely impressive because of the debater’s critical thinking skills and eloquent bilingual skills. The spectacular success of the Bilingual Debate Competition could not have been possible without the judges who have always been unwavering in their support and encouragement to the event.
This year, 16 students from SHS and 16 students from SHSID participated in a whole new format of preliminary rounds. Instead of direct elimination, students randomly debated in two rounds and were ranked according to their performance. Finally, on November 15th, the final round of 6th SHS & SHSID Bilingual debate was held in the Lecture Hall of ZT Building. Also present were distinguished judges, teachers, and students from both divisions.
Each team was made up of four players: two students from SHS and two from SHSID. They worked collaboratively to compete for the championship. As one of the contestants mentioned, during the Bilingual Debate Contest, he was able to see the world through a new perspective and has grown by exchanging different ideas.
Side proposition holds the stance “To know is easy, to do is difficult.” Side opposition holds the opposite stance “To do is easy, to know is difficult.” In the 40-minute debate, the contestants argued from different angles with scientific data and real truths, and they were well prepared and eloquent.
After the intense debate, the judges' made inspiring comments. The seven judges of the final round consisted of Chinese and foreign teachers from both divisions as well as guests from outside the school. The guests spoke highly of the rich knowledge reserve and skillful debating skills in Chinese and English shown by each contestant, whose calm and easy demeanor was equally impressive. Professor Liu Qing, commented on the techniques used by both sides in the debate such as expansionism, and explained "what matters in debate is understanding and potential changes rather than winning or losing the competition."
In the end, the "con" side won the 6th bilingual debate championship. Huang Yuhan, 2nd debater from the con side, won the title of "best debater".
The 6th SHS & SHSID Bilingual Debate Competition has successfully came to an end. We hope more students can join the Bilingual Debate family, spark the passion for debate and explore more possibilities in the future.
