Primary Subjects G3: the Egg-Drop Heroes

October 17, 2022

In week 7, students of G3 had the egg-drop experiment, one of the most anticipated early semester experiments of G3. Students went through multiple planning and designing sessions to flex the muscles of their newly acquired Engineering Mindset. This was also a great way for teachers to coach students on using the design process by understanding the fundamentals of materials science. Students and teachers had spent a few classes designing and testing a prototype to answer the question, “How do we design for a safer car?”

Students loved getting scientific and discussing all the ways they could think of to control for variables with the end goal that only the provided material-technologies present in their group’s design will shine. Which team’s design would present the best solution and prevent their eggs from getting smashed? Well, we dropped each design from the great height of our nearly 3-meter classroom ceiling to find out!

In the end, it was the teacher’s hope that the initial designs would fail! Part of the design process was to test, observe, and redesign the first prototype repeatedly. Students spent the final day of our egg drop experiment revising their first designs with technology brought from home in order to improve upon their initial designs.

At the end of our sessions, we saw an 80% improvement in “survival rates”. The data spoke for itself! And the mindsets of these children will be deeply impressed by the important role of responsible engineers in our society.
