SHSID Students Won Awards in “Science & Technology Stars of Tomorrow”

October 11, 2022

From August to September this year, two G11 students of SHISD attended Shanghai International Youth Science & Technology Expo’s invitational tournament “Science & Technology Stars of Tomorrow”. They won the Excellent Exhibition award and also placed second overall.

They have been quite interested in biological research for some time now and finally made these achievements. These years, numerous innovative explorations and research have emerged at SHISD with the idea of contributing to the personal and lifelong development. In addition to cultivating students' scientific literacy, SHSID is also committed to screening and providing a diverse platform for students to demonstrate their achievements. During the summer vacation, two students selected their own projects through the introduction of the activities on SHISID’s online system, and then learned about the Youth Science & Technology Expo. After discussing with their homeroom and subject teachers, they decided to participate with their own projects.

First of all, they participated in the online exhibition. Using the model plant Arabidopsis Thaliana as the research object, their project explored the role of transcription factors in plant roots through diverse signalling pathways under drought resistance. The project panel was displayed on the cloud and reviewed by experts at the Expo.

Afterwards, they were invited to participate in “Science & Technology Stars of Tomorrow”, the invitational tournament. It required them to use creative thinking to design and build a device that would allow an egg to complete a challenging journey using its own kinetic energy and potential energy. Under the goal of “carbon peak and carbon neutrality”, people were encouraged to practice a green, environmental protection and low-carbon lifestyle. During the preparation period, they spent a lot of time and effort trying to make the device, and also brainstorming with their physics teachers to discuss several engineering mechanics problems. Finally, they successfully challenged themselves, completed all the tasks in the project within the allotted three hours, and placed second.

From the initial online project exhibition to the final invitational tournament, these two students have experienced a tortuous and interesting exploration process. Especially at the “Science & Technology Stars of Tomorrow” invitational tournament, they were frustrated by the frequent failures of their testing equipment. However, under the “Stallion” spirit of “never giving up, they were brave and kept going as they went through setbacks and finally surpassed themselves”. “Follow the direction of your dreams, never stop learning, and never stop exploring.” These are also the words from SHSID teachers to all students. Again, congratulations!
