SHSID Students Attended SNERDI's Nuclear Power Science Popularization Activities
On September 24, 2022, the Public Open Day of the Nuclear Power Science Popularization Base and the Joint Action of Nuclear Science Popularization on the National Science Popularization Day opened in the reporting hall of the Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research and Design Institute (SNERDI). More than 40 teachers and students from nine primary and secondary schools in Shanghai were invited to attend. Three students from SHSID participated in this nuclear power science popularization activity.
The first part of the activity was "Nuclear Science Popularization Training - Young Ambassadors Approaching Nuclear Science". First of all, the students were awarded the certificate of "Nuclear Science Popularization Education Ambassador" on the stage in turn and obtained a nuclear power science brochure, which covered the relevant knowledge of nuclear power plants and the impact of nuclear power. Because of this visit, the students could learn about nuclear power easily and then spread their knowledge of nuclear power to more people.
Later, the professor from SNERDI lectured on nuclear science to the students. The lecture covered the basic principles of nuclear power, the operation process of nuclear power plants, historical nuclear accidents, and the current development of nuclear power technology. The students listened carefully and took notes, actively answered questions, and shared their views.
After the lecture, there was a nuclear power knowledge contest. The students participating in the activity were randomly divided into eight groups in advance. In each group, they answered the mandatory and preemptive questions. During the competition, the students cooperated well and learned from each other, showing their enthusiasm for nuclear power knowledge.
The second part of the activity was "Visit to the Nuclear Energy Base - Young Ambassadors Enter the Base". The students first visited the Human Factors Engineering Laboratory. The researcher explained to the students how the engineers monitor more than ten displays in the laboratory; read the operation status, equipment parameters, and other data of the nuclear power plant from the central large screen; and deal with emergencies. Another VR research room can achieve "cloud repair" of nuclear power plant operation facilities through VR glasses. Students can become nuclear power engineers, enter the nuclear power plant to read data, and monitor the operation of facilities through on-site simulation.
Then the students visited the exhibition hall of national major special innovation achievements, where many models of nuclear power-related components and facilities were displayed. The engineers explained the structure and usage of each facility for the students. The students could watch the operation process of each process by pressing different buttons and intuitively felt the charm of nuclear power.
After the visit to the nuclear base, this nuclear science popularization activity was also nearing the end. The students not only gained nuclear power-related knowledge in the activity but also realized the charm of nuclear power science.
Student Reflection
"This nuclear science popularization activity brought me a lot of surprises and gains. When I visited the nuclear module models, I felt that these models condensed the current developed technology and technical strength, and what was put in front of us was just a small part. Looking at them, I am full of longing and expectation for the future development of science and technology. I am so very looking forward to the next event!"
"While this will likely be my first and final time at the nuclear engineering institute, this won’t be the first or last time I will think back to this experience. To see the crowds of excitement, to participate with eager young faces was unforgettable. In seeing the hope in the eyes of those who will be the future, I found a sense of solace and familiarity — that I was not alone in my restless pursuit of science, that I found others who share a common passion. In learning science, I learned about myself."
