Puxi G4-5: Growth Mindset

September 30, 2022

In the beginning of the academic year, the fourth and fifth graders are learning to become more confident in their own self development. Based on the letter "G" in Grade 4’s core value “GROW” and Grade 5's core value "GRADUATE", teachers and students have been discussing the meaning of "Growth Mindset" together, with the hope that students can deeply understand what it means to have a growth mindset through self-awareness and exploration, whilst striving to have growth thinking.

Grade 4

In class, teachers used fun activities to help students realize that failure is not a terrible thing. The most important thing is that we can learn from the experience and have the courage to restart.

For example, in the interactive activity, students needed to find the target shape among a pile of complex shapes. Compared to directly showing the shape, students more actively participated in the task and experienced the fun part brought by a challenge. After that, with the guidance of teachers, students reflected their own learning experiences such as in learning a sport or a musical instrument, and they further understood that the brain also needs practice to make progress.

After that, students made paper cuts that represent victory. In class, students collected many positive words by listening to the energetic songs, including sunshine, peace, hope, kind, etc. They wrote these words on the victory paper cuts and decorated them with great care. When students put their fine victory paper cuts on the wall, the positive mindset from our students forms a strong energy that encourages everyone to keep this positive and optimistic attitude in daily lives!

Grade 5

In class, the teacher used a survey to introduce the topic, the students reflected on their mentality by choosing the degree of which they agree with each statement, calculating the scores, and reading the corresponding meaning.

Next, through the story of the Mojo and Rebecca, the students discussed the changes and effects of growth mindset on the main characters in the video, in "Think-Pair-Share" groups. These two stories resonated with the students. From their discussion, the teachers felt that the students grasped a deeper understanding of growth mindset, and that a person's willpower, optimism, never-give-up attitude, cooperation and other aspects of growth mindset will bring about gains and growth.

After self and in-depth understanding of growth mindset, students demonstrated their growth thinking by making small posters of "I Have a Growth Mindset". Students reflected on their own achievements and learning from their past mistakes by decorating small light bulbs and expressing their goals and specialties with pictures, symbols and words. Colorful paintbrushes paint the students' expectations of bettering themselves.

In the fast-changing society, we expect students to gain new knowledge and skills and, more importantly, to cultivate positive learning attitudes and realize their inner potential. With the discussion on growth mindset, we aim at encouraging students to develop growth mindsets by embracing challenges, conquering obstacles, and celebrating mistakes as learning opportunities.
