Grades 9-10: Mental Health Lectures Held
SHSID aims at cultivating independent life-long learners with strong physical bodies and positive mentality. SHSID cares about students’ mental health and spares no efforts in providing professional mental counselling services and creating a supportive school environment.
In order to help students adjust in time and spend their high school life with a relaxed and joyful attitude, the school organized three psychological lectures with different themes for all students in Grades 9 and 10 on the afternoon of September 28. Students could choose the one they were interested in and attend the lecture.
The first lecture was a lecture on "Coping with Stress and Anxiety " by Mr. Hung. He began by explaining the human body's natural reaction to stress and then assisted the students in understanding the proper way to cope with stress and deal with pressure. Mr. Hung also introduced ways to reduce stress, such as taking a deep breath, setting up a calendar, etc. These methods could surely help students cope with stress and reduce the effects that pressure has on them.
The second lecture “Mindfulness: healthy eating, sleeping and lifestyle” was brought by Ms. Fong. She opened her lecture by explaining her role in health psychology and promoting healthy living habits as a counseling psychologist. She then went on to explain the importance of having a healthy sleep schedule and how to combat insomnia using mindfulness. To let students better understand and experience mindfulness, she led them through several exercises, such as mindful breathing and body scanning. She also provided students with information about habits like mindful eating and meditation, which they could practice in their daily lives. All those in the audience were able to learn something from her advice and felt more comfortable and relaxed after the exercises.
Other students attended the lecture entitled “Internet Safety and Keeping a Healthy Relationship with Technology”. The lecture circled around various problems one can encounter while using technology and the internet and taught the students how to cope with them. Some of the problems discussed included comparing oneself with others in social media leading to low self-esteem, anxiety and depression, etc. With an intensive explanation of the typical symptoms, students could identify whether they were addicted to social media unconsciously. Ms. Zhang also provided the students with some methods of overcoming phone addiction, such as setting a no-phone zone or prohibiting oneself from using the phone altogether. In the end, based on internet safety and usage of technology, making a balanced time plan between counterproductive and productive activities should be the key to preventing ourselves from an improper relationship with technology.
Hope all the students could enjoy their life with an optimistic attitude!
