Grade 10: Starting Semester College Counselling Lectures
Throughout the first three weeks of school, students have been given the opportunity to listen to two lectures in regard to standardized testing and college counseling. Students were also given a chance to choose their TA houses.
In this first lecture, students were first given a holistic review of college admissions, consisting of standardized tests, extracurricular activities, transcripts, essays, and teachers’ recommendations. Furthermore, Ms. Zeng from the College Counselling Office provided a brief four-year plan, giving an overview of what high school students should expect in their corresponding grade levels. This included what sorts of goals a high schooler should have leading up to their application year such as increasing their academic performance, exploring their passions, taking the standardized tests, and various summer programs. The remainder of the lecture consisted of a more detailed explanation for the registration process of some standardized tests.
In the following lecture, the director of the College Counselling Office, Ms. Cui Mengdi, spent the session discussing the primary differences between various regions and engaged with the audience to ask questions related to what college supplementary essays could look like. It is important to note that colleges are not simply looking for perfect grades—they value group activities and the experiences coming from them, rather than the results. Students learned that it is simply a matter of choosing the right environment for themselves.
Finally, the TA houses were introduced as options for students to have a counselor and guide throughout their high school experience. Each TA specializes in a field and has experience working with students. As the new school year begins, SHSID provides a variety of supports for students to prosper.
