Primary School English Department: G2-5 Summer Holiday Homework
The autumn breeze has sent the school bell ringing. During the summer holidays, students from Grade 2 to Grade 5 in SHSID Puxi campus completed their summer assignments, each of which was a beautiful piece of work. Now let's take a look at the students' assignments!
Over the summer holiday, the second-grade students began to prepare for their new school year at SHSID. Their summer homework gave them a choice of activities to encourage positive reading habits. Students were required to keep a reading log of all the fiction and non-fiction books they read over the summer. Then they chose 6 activities from a choice of 8. These activities were aiming to help introduce the students to their new teachers. The second-grade teachers really enjoyed reading and learning about their students in the first week!
The third-grade students discovered a whole new way to have fun in the sun—reading! By hand-selecting books that interested them, analyzing the books’ key details, and contrasting their elements using charts and graphs. First place! Second! Third! The students decided which books they read were worthy of these titles and why. They noted the plot, the setting and the characters. But most importantly, they used independent thinking skills—a core tenet of the SHSID educational philosophy. Over the course of the project, students learned how these books impacted them, and what caused certain titles to resonate more than others.
Students entering fourth grade were tasked with a classic book report to complete over the summer holiday. They were provided with an extensive list of age-appropriate suggested novels. The purpose of the book report was to allow students the freedom of guided choice when selecting a novel to read over their summer holiday, and to ensure their task was structured and was a preview of what would be expected in the beginning months of their upcoming academic year. As it was their first official homework score of Grade 4, it was evident that students put a lot of effort into their reports; wanting to showcase their understanding of their selected novel, in conjunction with their writing abilities.
In Grade 5 for S and S+ English, the purpose of the summer homework was to read two fictional books from a provided book list. These books ranged in genre from fantasy, adventure, mystery, and historical fiction. The main objective after reading two books was to select one to complete a narrative plot analysis. Each student had to identify plot elements in their novel, for example, the setting, conflict, rising actions, climax, falling action, and resolution. Each student also needed to find five new vocabulary words to define, or infer the meaning based on context. The purpose of the summer homework was to review these plot details learned in previous years, since narrative writing is the first focus in grade 5.
Through the display of students' assignments, each piece of work is filled with the hard work of teachers and students. We wish our students a better academic year!
