Grade 9: High School Life Launch Lesson & Gateway Course
On August 31st, as the students returned to school, the high school life of the new ninth graders slowly kicked off, and a new chapter officially began. In order to help students clarify the academic and various requirements of high school, complete the transition from middle school to high school, and adapt to high school life more smoothly, a High School Life Launch Lesson and Gateway Course for new 9th graders was held on August 31st and September 2nd.
“Now It Begins”——High School Life Launch Lesson
On the afternoon of August 31st, the ninth graders arrived at the auditorium of Xianmian Building in an orderly manner to attend the High School Life Launch Lesson assembly. Ms. Yu Zhen, the supervisor of Grade 9, first welcomed all new high school students and made a brief comparison of life in high school and middle school. Facing new challenges, she hoped that the students would adjust their mentality as soon as possible; then, Ms. Yu gave a detailed and clear introduction to the characteristics of high school academic courses, campus activities, physical and mental health caring, etc., so that students could quickly have a comprehensive understanding of high school life.
To enable the all-rounded and individualized development of each student, the TA (Teacher Advisor) program set by the school is open to all high school students. Ms. Chen Lin from the TA office used several live videos to demonstrate the convenient process and available resources of TA consultation. In addition to the professional teacher advisors, students themselves have the opportunity to become "peer advisors" to help their classmates as well. With the company and support of teachers and classmates, it is believed that every student can quickly adapt to their high school life.
Next, two outstanding student representatives from the tenth grade shared their own experiences and tips from the aspects of academic studies, extracurricular activities and time management. They emphasized that, in high school, faced with a wealth of choices, both exploring and pursuing one’s own interests are the keys to maintaining a balanced mindset.
Finally, Ms. Cui Mengdi, the director of the College Counseling Office gave the introduction of the school’s resources and support about university applications. Focusing on this theme, Ms. Cui put forward plans and suggestions for all four years of high school and taught the students how to finish university applications more efficiently.
“Strategy. Transition. Exploration”——High School Gateway Course
On the morning of September 2nd, students who had experienced the first day of high school courses gathered again in the auditorium of the Xianmian Building to participate in the Gateway Course series of lectures. High School Vice Principal Ms. Liu Min first gave a general introduction of the high school courses. Starting from the common problems in academic study in the transition phase, she emphasized the importance of learning initiative and suitable learning approaches. She pointed out that in the learning process, some good study habits and qualities are general, and for different disciplines, mastering their own characteristics and connecting them all are the prerequisites to achieving integration and flexible application of knowledge.
In order to help the students quickly adapt to the high school curriculum with wider content and increasing difficulty, the school invited senior teachers and representatives of outstanding students from 11 subjects including Chinese, English, and mathematics to give lectures. The lectures were introduced from different perspectives such as subject characteristics, curriculum settings, and learning experience. The comprehensive subject introduction given by the teachers and the valuable experience taught by the students allowed the Grade 9 students to have an immerse subject journey. After all the lectures were over, students were still excited about the lectures, eager and confident about their high school life.
The three-day high school life launch lecture series came to an end and all the students are now ready to start their new chapter. We wish every student a happy start to high school life!
