June 15, 2022

The SHSID High School Social Sciences Department covers a number of social science disciplines such as economics, business, law, psychology, etc. It offers multi-dimensional courses including IB, AP, A-level, as well as Business Management, Accounting, Introduction to Law among others, to provide students with a variety of course options to meet their needs for the development of their interests. The courses focus on the practical application and interdisciplinary learning, aiming to improve students' attention and understanding to the real-world issues as well as the formation of interdisciplinary thinking. Therefore, the courses could help cultivate students’ critical thinking and application skills. The department invites experts from various industries to give lectures to students from time to time or provides opportunities to students to visit enterprises and organizations to do internships. This semester, although restricted by online teaching, the Social Sciences Department still organized a number of exciting online activities both inside and outside of classes to stimulate students' interest in relevant subjects. At the same time, many students have won awards in various competitions, showing their outstanding abilities.

Although we have switched to online teaching for most of the semester, class activities and projects have still been in full swing via online classrooms. In Grade 10 Economics classes, students independently explored various interesting and current hot issues such as the impacts of economic policies under the pandemic in different countries, the impacts of the pandemic on telecommuting and employment, the impacts of the Beijing Winter Olympics on the Chinese economy, and the application of Bitcoin in different areas. Students in the Grade 11 Business Management course continued on the way of starting up a business. They gradually built their own "start-ups" by formulating marketing strategies, shooting advertisements, establishing financial forecasting models, writing business plans, and conducting road shows. In the Grade 11/12 Law and Business course, students were invited to make videos on legal tips for prospective graduates who are about to start their college lives. The topics covered legal culture and traditions in Europe and the United States, rental considerations and dispute resolution, and analytical framework of infringement cases. In this process, the students carried out in-depth independent research together with the course contents, enhancing practicality and academic quality.
