Middle School Chinese Department: Finding Good Books, Falling in Love with Reading—G8 Chinese Non-Native Language Theme Activity
Reading a good book is like making a good friend, which provides you with answers and spiritual comfort. In order to cultivate students’ passion for reading and to let them feel the charm of Chinese, the G8 teachers of non-native Chinese classes designed activities with the theme of “Finding Good Books, Falling in Love with Reading,” aiming to help students understand the significance of reading and gain enlightenment.
To encourage students to participate, the teachers arranged a variety of assignments that students can choose from. There was a “Good Book Sharing” assignment—they shared their favorite passage and how they felt after reading it by “Reading Together Online.” They understood each other with words. “The Reading Poster” asked students to share and introduce their favorite books by designing posters or recording their fragmented reading. The high level students even completed the project “If I were a book” based on writing. Students repeatedly revised their manuscripts and carefully set the music and made videos after the manuscripts were finalized to obtain better results. In this process, the non-native students thought broadly and they overcame the language difficulties to present an excellent project that far exceeded expectations, which not only reflected the students’ excellent Chinese expression ability, but also their favor for books.
In addition to the project assignments, another task of this activity was to create a poster called “My Best Assignments,” which was submitted by non-native students of all levels. Students chose 1-3 of their own best assignments and why they chose them. (e.g., “My writing is not bad,” “My teacher circled a lot of good words in my essay,” “I got an A+ for my reading!” etc.) This task enabled them to become more serious in completing their Chinese homework, and their interest in writing and reading Chinese books also became stronger when making the poster.
The enthusiasm of non-native students for Chinese language learning was significantly increased through this activity. Although students cannot return to school to attend the award ceremony, the students chose their most satisfying assignments by themselves this time and reviewed and summarized their Chinese learning. Thank you to all the students for their dedication. We wish that students achieve happiness and growth in Chinese learning and reading.
