Grade 7: Chinese Talk Show [SHSID Special Session]

June 9, 2022

On the afternoon of June 9, the seventh-grade students welcomed the long-expected online Chinese talk show competition in the youth development class. After learning online for nearly three months, in order to enrich students’ school life, the Chinese speech competition this semester put on an innovative new form of “talk show.”

This time students chose from a broader range of topics that were colorful and closely related to everyday life. Under the teachers’ guidance, students learned how to build stories, how to think deeply about hot issues, and how to carry out a good talk show.

Subsequently, with the careful preparation of the students, the talk show competition was held in full swing. The talk shows performed by students during Chinese classes all had compact rhythms and intricate plots. At the same time, the reversal of the end was unexpected and surprising. While bringing many joys and laughter, many students mentioned profound life experiences, social phenomena, international situations, etc. with their own thinking, which are worthy of the audiences’ reflection. During this special period, the talk shows have created a happy and relaxing classroom atmosphere and allowed students to seriously feel and carefully observe everyday life, gain insights, and further reflect.

Finally, after rounds of selections, 12 emerging talk show stars were discovered in Grade 7, and they brought wonderful performances to every 7th graders during YD class! They are: 7 (2) Lindsey, 7 (7) Mark, 7 (8) Alex, 7 (4) Emma, 7 (2) Helen, 7 (11) Amelia, Elaine, 7 (11) Bill, 7 (1) Ray, 7 (8) Mia, 7 (10) Karen, and 7 (11) Victor.

During the process of this talk show competition, every 7th grader invested lots of time and effort into it. The performances impressed every audience and left valuable memories. Many students said that this talk show would be an unforgettable experience for them. It may be because they resonated with the characters in the talk show stories; it may also be because the selection of the stories was novel and unique, which encouraged students to think deeply. Either way, we believe that through this activity, students not only had a more personal experience of how to write the draft of the talk show but also could feel the art and charm of the Chinese language through the on-site show.
