Focus on Your Interests and Enjoy Chemistry
Many students are interested in chemistry at first because they are fond of doing experiments. By mixing different reagents to observe color changes, tumbling bubbles, or electric sparks, the student feels like Harry Potter who has opened a wonderful gate to the world of magic. In high school, the students of SHSID not only experienced the charm of chemical experiments and research in the classroom, but also explored the mysteries of chemistry after class through home experiments, experimental posters, and competition clubs to develop their own interests and expertise.
In the tenth-grade chemistry project, many students designed posters while exploring chemical experiments, using different ways to explain the meaning of chemical reactions from the perspective of chemical formulas, chemical names, and microscopic particles. Some students even had creative ideas and came up with poster slogans like "Your ‘beauty (magnesium)’ stole my ‘heart (zinc)’" to demonstrate the core idea of single replacement reactions. Students always manage to find the fun and enjoy the learning process while gaining new knowledge.
In addition, in chemistry competitions, students with expertise and interest continue to develop their potential. In the USNCO (United States National Chemistry Olympiad) regional competition that ended in March 2022, the SHSID high school students won the top four places in the Shanghai regional competition. In the UKCHO (UK Chemistry Olympiad) which ended in April 2022, the students also achieved excellent results of 11 golds, 13 silvers, and 13 bronzes. Some students said: "By effectively using facts and logic, I can solve many problems. This is a great experience for me."
In addition to paving the way for students to achieve good grades in chemistry class and other classes, as well as making more students love chemistry in general, the original intention and purpose of the Chemistry Club was to also deeply study, persistently pursue, and wholeheartedly enjoy the competitions the club competes in. The high school students of SHSID have been focusing on their interests with wisdom, enthusiasm, and hard work, all while exploring their potential and enjoying their studies!
