Puxi Campus Grades 4-5: Kindness Week

June 6, 2022

In the past two months, there were many moving moments. Grade four and five students of the Puxi campus had Kindness Week from May 30 to June 2, discussing and practicing kindness. Students tried their best to be kind in their daily lives and had a week full of love and warmth.

On Monday, teachers played a video showing moving moments in our ordinary lives. Students were greatly moved by the kindness in the video and received the challenge of the week: complete 50 kindness acts! Though the items in the checklists are as simple as saying “hi” to your neighbors or recycling one item, it is the sense of achievement and satisfaction that matters most to our students.

On Tuesday, students had a discussion on kindness. What does kindness mean to you? Why is it important to be kind? How do you feel when you show kindness to others? If you are a superhero, who do you want to help? Through these questions, students reflected on the meaning of kindness to us. Students defined kindness as care, respect, and forgiving and helping others. Their answers were also combined and edited into pictures for spreading their love and kindness. Students discussed their understanding of kindness with their parents and friends, and through a meeting of minds, they shared their different perspectives on kindness.

On Wednesday, the students watched a video to learn how to say “thank you” in fifty different languages. The students tried to rewrite famous quotes about kindness using different emojis. Through this activity, they could feel and experience the kindness around them. They created many interesting “kindness emojis” by using their imagination and creativity. Through sharing, they were also able to gain a deeper understanding of what kindness means to them.

On Thursday, the students learned about and practiced “self-compassion.” Self-compassion is non-judgmental awareness of the present moment, that is, being aware of ourselves as we are, including our bodies, emotions, thoughts, and actions. The teachers provided the students with a fun picture book that they could use to understand and care for their thoughts and emotions. Hopefully, through practicing self-compassion, they would be able to respond to their current selves with kindness and gentleness. Grade 4 students also tried to make a selfie banner, which allows them to feel connected to kindness by being the “I” in kind. Fifth-grade students reviewed the kindness acts they did in the past week and also appreciated the people who helped them.

The kindness week is over now, but the love of the students, the teachers, and the parents is not. Students will continue to try expressing their own acts of kindness in their everyday lives and try to show more care and understanding to themselves while caring for the world and those around them.
