Science and Engineering Festival: Medicine
In the continuation lectures of the Science and Technology Festival of SHSID middle school, S we had the honor to invited two teachers from the professional team in Shanghai to talk about the theme of medicine for students. The two lectures on May 24th and 26th explained diabetes and brain diseases to students in detail, which advocated the importance of medicine to all mankind and cultivated students' passion for medical research.
In the first lecture, Ms. Zhuang introduced the impact of diabetes on people’s lives from three aspects, the pathogenesis of diabetes, the classification of diabetes, and the impact of daily diet on blood sugar. The teacher introduced the two most common types of diabetes and explained various treatments including a reduced-carbohydrate diet and light exercise or, taking drugs to lower blood sugar levels. She also noted that if problems persist, taking insulin may be necessary for patients.
Then the teacher asked students to use their imagination to guess which foods have the highest carb index. Students answered these questions actively. Ms. Zhuang introduced the influence of various foods on diabetes and the structure of food to the students. Reylang from 8-3 said, “I think this lecture is very interesting, from which I also learned why diabetes is hereditary. Meanwhile, all my classmates and I have been interacting with the teacher.”
In addition, in the lecture on the 26th, Ms. Yao led students to learn some scientific innovations about cerebrovascular diseases, think about how scientists treat these diseases, and understand how people should deal with such emergencies when these diseases occur in life. At the end of the content section, Ms. Yao described the 120 rules for emergencies, which is useful in our daily life. Both middle-aged and older people have some risk of stroke. This knowledge helps us to care for our families in a scientific way.
In the end, Ms. Yao led students to summarize the overall meaning of cerebral apoplexy and the method of rescue with multiple-choice games. After the lecture, many students said that the teacher's explanation of this part was very adequate, and they had fully understood the concept of cerebrovascular disease.
In these two lectures, students were wide-eyed and showed great zeal for knowledge. We hope to have inspired students’ interest in science through these lectures, and we encourage students to contribute to the development of medicine in the future!
