Grades 9-10: Star Club Showcasing

May 27, 2022

The CAS periods on May 25th are slated for the 9th- and 10th-grade club showcase, where clubs present their promotional videos and compete for the title of “Star Club”. They get to display their club’s accomplishments and community impact as well as reflect on how far they have come. Now, it is their moment to shine.

There is a broad spectrum of clubs ranging from academics to art to community service. For STEM-related clubs, there are SciAcademy, Electronics, GT-Racing, and SHSID Game Development. These clubs, such as SciAcademy, aim to spread knowledge through their official accounts and lectures, allowing students, even during lockdown times, to connect through their interest in STEM. Next were the humanities clubs, including, but not limited to, 争鸣社, Fanfiction, and Mock Trial. The Mock Trial Club video started with their iconic phrase, “May it please the court, opposing counsels, and members of the jury.” They presented their professional attorneys and dedicated witnesses through enacting a trial scene.

Students passionate about music join the clubs like Korean Janggu Club (KJC) and Vibaholic Productions. These clubs all showcased their achievements during lockdown, such as online concerts and collaborative-style videos. Then, for arts, we had Art to Zine, Artsy Fantasy, Banana Heads, 16 GB, In Whose Eye, Look Fashion, and the Handcrafting Club. In Whose Eye and Look Fashion hold a similar belief: no one should define beauty or fashion because we define ourselves. All clubs provide a creative and expression platform for students to create.

There are also community service-oriented clubs such as TFE (Tech for Elders), Furry Friends, and Sycle. These clubs spread awareness about environmental or societal issues and help out the community. The clubs showcased the articles they had written and the in-person activities they had set up in the community.

Many of the clubs persist in their activities even during lockdown. The Kendama Club and Rubik’s Cube Club continue to polish their skills. MCG hosted their online concert, bringing music for students to enjoy during lunch break.

After the first round of voting for which clubs earn the honor of being a Star Club, we wait for the second round to take place in June. SHSID clubs benefit not only club members, but also spread knowledge and love beyond the school gates. Clubs offer the opportunity for students to take a break from their studies and delve into their interests. The progress that every club makes, such as publishing articles or donating money, helps educate and connect our community.
