Middle School Math Department: G8 Project “Investigating Math in Life”

May 18, 2022

Every day, students are introduced to new concepts, formulas, and methods in math class, but a far more important part of the learning process requires the application of knowledge outside of the classroom. To help students better understand the usage of math in real life in a cross-curricular manner, 8th grade math teachers prepared a research project related to the United Nations’ 17 sustainable development goals.

The project involved two components, in the first, students chose to solve math questions about cryptography, organ donation, or homepage recommendations. In the second, they researched solutions to another problem that mathematicians had provided, making a poster to summarize their findings.

This project not only encouraged students to be more aware of the practical applications of mathematics but also utilized a cross-curricular connection to help students broaden their scope of thought, using the UN’s sustainable development goals as the essential foundation. This has been an exercise of students’ critical thinking skills and research abilities, one that will no doubt prepare them to be excellent global citizens in the future.
