Middle and Primary School Math Department: G7 Project “Investigating the Application of Pythagorean Theorem”

May 17, 2022

During the online schooling, 7th grade math teachers have designed a project on the Pythagorean Theorem, so as to increase activities while studying mathematics. Through detailed research and analysis, students will be able to grasp the key points of using the theorem, as well as be able to unlock the gate to the fun of math in real life. This project is separated into two main sections: proving the theorem, and research and discussion of real-life applications.

To begin with, students have been taught the basic use of the Pythagorean Theorem in singular geometric figures and compound models. Next, expanding on the primary concepts of the theorem, word problems that imitate some real-world situations follow. By consolidating the concepts of the theory, students are small experts in studying the Pythagorean Theorem, by this point. Then, in the second half of the project, students choose to complete a poster or presentation slides with a team or individually. In class, they will share their thoughts and what they have learned from applications of the Pythagorean Theorem in real life. This not only tests the students on the level of understanding they have on the theory itself, but more importantly, it sparks imagination in students’ minds, and enhances their abilities of teamwork and conducting research.

In addition to these academic sections, the teachers have prepared a little surprise for the students at the end of the project packet. To earn extra credit, students can use their own creativity, or make use of the sources they have got, and make their own Pythagoras’s Cup. This is no ordinary cup, for if one drinks too quickly from it, the amount of water that he or she can actually get to drink will decrease. The reason behind this miraculous phenomenon is the combination of math theories and the siphon principle, achieving a chain reaction between mathematics and science.

Math can be found everywhere in life. With closer observations and deeper thinking, more mysteries could be discovered and solved. We hope that students will be able to uncover math in real life, love math, and appreciate the beauty of math!
